Tips for Debtors

There is an old saying that goes “you cannot squeeze blood out of a stone”. This simply means if you physically don’t have any money on you nobody can get any money off you.

Debt collectors in their zealous desire to collect debt, do not know when they cross the line between what is acceptable and legitimate   debt collecting practices and unlawful practices which amounts to harassment.

Debt collectors are generally of the view that debtors don’t want to pay their debt and that they will use all kinds of excuses not to pay.

Please note the following:

  • You cant go to jail just because you are unable to pay your debt, as long as fraud is not involved.
  • When you become aware of an outstanding debt do not accept liability before checking to see the debt figure you are been quoted is correct.
  • A Debt collector does not have any power to enter your house except you invite him in.

Debt collectors have to abide by a laid down code of practice.
